The Game Comic

Looking for more quick conversion work we met with Fergus McGovern, owner of Probe Software, who were producing a lot of games for Acclaim one of the largest publishers at the time. They were developing the MegaDrive version of Judge Dredd for the upcoming Silvester Stallone movie and offered us the contract to convert this to the Master System, Game Gear and GameBoy.

A couple of our employees did the work with Andrew assisting. There were development issues since the contract specified a direct conversion and when we asked to reduce the level sizes to make it more compatible to shorter gameplay sessions on mobile we were denied as they felt this cheapened the experience. As a result, it’s impossible to play through the Game Gear version without being plugged in and therefore not a very portable experience.

We also had to seriously increase the size of the bullets and reduce their speed to make them visible on the smaller, lower resolutions screens. As a result, they appear to be shooting slow tennis balls!

Andrew blames this game for his eyesight deteriorating quickly as he was spending hours looking at a GameBoy screen! Since this, he’s worn glasses or contacts.
